Latta Nature Preserve
A large county preserve on Mountain Island Lake with more than 16 miles of trails.
What it is
Latta sits on Mountain Island Lake—not Lake Norman—on Huntersville’s southwest side. Quest reports more than 16 miles of trails across the preserve, and the Carolina Raptor Center’s Raptor Trail and the Quest nature center are both inside it.
It is the area’s best single destination for a long walk, a family nature morning or birdwatching.
Before you go
- Pick up a trail map at Quest or download one from the county.
- Trail permissions (bikes, horses) vary by trail; check county rules before planning.
Planning your visit
This is a public place with no admission charge. Operating hours, parking rules and any facility closures are set by the operator named on this page; check before you go, especially around holidays, storms and large events, when lots fill or areas close.
We have not independently verified accessibility features such as step-free routes, accessible restrooms or parking unless they are listed under confirmed features. Contact the operator for specifics before your visit.
Visiting parks around Huntersville
Parks here are run by different operators—the Town of Huntersville, Mecklenburg County Park & Recreation and nonprofit partners—so rules, hours, fees and reservations are not uniform. Check the operator named on this page before you go.
Trail permissions for bikes, dogs and horses vary by trail. Do not assume a connection between parks exists until an operator lists it as open.
This place is on Mountain Island Lake, not Lake Norman. See our lake experiences guide for how launches, beaches and shoreline parks differ.
