The perspective
Huntersville holds some of Mecklenburg County’s oldest surviving places. Their stories include farming families, a traveling merchant, and the enslaved people whose labor shaped the land. Access differs sharply from site to site.

A 265-acre historic site, preserve and working farm on Neck Road. It includes the 1900 Bethesda Schoolhouse, one of the first schools for African American children in the county, and the 1890 Davidson one-room schoolhouse. Trails and festivals make it a full outing; Rural Hill asks visitors to call to confirm tour times.
A c.1779 homesite and store on Gilead Road, interpreted through docent-led tours and community programs. Treat it as a scheduled visit, not a drop-in stop.
Inside Latta Nature Preserve, this 16-acre county site operated as a living-history farm until 2021. The county closed it to reconsider how it tells the history of the more than 65 enslaved people who lived there, and plans to reopen it as a place of truth-telling and reflection. It is not currently a regular visitor stop.

Rural Hill’s trails make it a full outing on their own. The Hugh Torance House and Store is closer to downtown and pairs well with lunch at Birkdale. Latta Place sits inside Latta Nature Preserve; while the historic site is closed to regular visits, the preserve’s trails and Quest remain open.
Historic sites host festivals, ghost tours, school days and craft demonstrations on their own schedules. Check each site’s calendar; our events page lists only dates we have confirmed.
