Latta Place

A 16-acre county historic site inside Latta Nature Preserve, closed to regular visits since 2021.

What it is

From the 1970s to 2021 Latta Place operated as a living-history farm. The county states that the land was home to Indigenous peoples and to more than 65 enslaved men, women and children, as well as colonial landowners.

Mecklenburg County closed the site in 2021 and is pursuing a community-driven plan to reopen it as a place to address the legacies of a plantation economy.

These places hold layered histories, including those of Indigenous peoples and of enslaved people whose labor shaped the land. Good interpretation tells the whole story, and so do we.

This place is on Mountain Island Lake, not Lake Norman. See our lake experiences guide for how launches, beaches and shoreline parks differ.
